Why Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid history in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player after his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to play for either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
