A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
