This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
