The Two Fatalities Revealed in Brown University Shooting as Police Persist in Hunt for Gunman.

Both young individuals who died in Saturday’s tragic incident in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their killer continued following the release by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect questioned in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also posted condolences publicly, stating: “It's indescribable. Remembering her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

His name was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were injured in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said late Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a raid at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“There is a killer at large,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”

Community Anxiety

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our public”.

The assailant opened fire inside a room in the engineering facility on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official informed the news agency.

Officers that searched the hotel recovered two firearms and two loaded 30-round magazines when the person of interest was detained, according to reports.

Condition of the Injured

Of the nine hurt, one student was discharged from care, stated Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, officials reported on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a message. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and peers and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to statistics.
