The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A freshly coined initialism surfaced several months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals like child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for medical staff to treat a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that violations are continuing. Officials disputes these claims, consistent with how it disavows everything it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what unity resembles.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A contest that once promoted togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
