The 72-year-old has gone everywhere from Monticello to popular podcasts to talk about his latest monumental work: The American Revolution, a monumental six-part, 12-hour documentary series that consumed the past decade of his life and arrived this week through the public broadcasting service.

Comparable to methodical preparation in today’s rapid-consumption era, this documentary series is defiantly traditional, evoking memories of historical documentary classics as opposed to modern streaming docs audio documentaries.

However, for the filmmaker, whose professional life chronicling strands of US history spanning various American subjects, the nation’s founding represents more than another topic but foundational. “I said this to my co-director Sarah Botstein recently, and she concurred: we won’t work on a more important film Burns states from his New York base.

Extensive Historical Investigation

The filmmaking team and screenwriter Geoffrey Ward referenced countless written sources plus archival documents. In one segment, academic Alan Taylor comments: “The primary misunderstanding about the American Revolution centers on assuming it constituted that unified Americans. It leaves out the reality that Americans fought each other.”

The filmmaker also sought {to rediscover the
