Snapshots and Melodies as Ethiopians Observe Gratitude Festival
A multitude of brightly clothed participants gathered in the heart of Ethiopia's capital for the yearly thanksgiving festival during recent days.
This thanksgiving celebration is celebrated by the Oromo, the biggest community, and is held at the conclusion of the land's main rainy season.
Every year, festival-goers assemble around holy water bodies to give thanks to their higher powers for the greenery that the rains have provided.
"I've attended this celebration for the past nine years," commented young adult Moata Abdulmajid.
"For me, the celebration symbolizes my cultural background, it demonstrates the pride and significance of my people."
Gentlemen, women, the older generation and the youth all take part, ornamented in eye-catching clothes and accessories.
They chant, perform traditional dances, share stories and arrange newly gathered grass and blossoms in water - symbolizing vitality, renewal and optimism.
Global Attendance
The celebration does not only attract participants from throughout the country, guests travel from around the world.
"I came a year ago - the experience was amazing, so spectacular, I brought along my kids with me currently," expressed Claire, from abroad.
"It's incredible. Everyone greets you, all attendees wants to give you a kiss and expresses hospitality."
Festival Program
The opening day of the festival took place on recently in the capital. On the next day, festival-goers travelled to Bishoftu, a community near the urban center.
While the festival has its roots in native spiritual practices, it is now observed by the bulk of the Oromo people, irrespective of their belief system.
Modern Developments
In the past decade, the figure of participants joining the celebration has grown significantly. This is in part thanks to the growth of digital platforms, where numerous youth document their attire, dance moves and vocal performances during the festival.
Historical Context
In the previous years, Irreecha was served as a venue for public dissent - the Oromo community have historically expressed concerns about political and economic marginalisation.
Nevertheless, this year's celebration took place calmly, with an focus on celebration, unity and ethnic identity.
