Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.

The Cause of the Latest Exchange

Wilson's reaction came after Payton made comments after Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a stint in broadcasting.
  • Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

If Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his coach.
