NRL Club Star Eli Katoa Sidelined for Whole 2026 Season Following Multiple Head Impacts and Neurosurgery

Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa has been officially ruled out the entire 2026 rugby league season as he continues his recovery at home in his home state, after returning from a extended period in Auckland after undergoing a neurosurgical procedure.

What Happened

The 25-year-old suffered three head impacts in a single afternoon while representing Tonga in a Pacific Championship match versus the Kiwis. This led to seizures while off the field, requiring emergency medical attention.

A surgical procedure to relieve bleeding on the brain resulted in Katoa in the hospital and initially unable to travel to his club base.

The team revealed this week that Katoa has finally returned home and is on the mend, having also been briefly admitted to a Melbourne hospital.

“Eli’s health and wellbeing remain our number one priority,” said the club's chief executive a team official. “It is great to have him back home and under the care of our club doctor and specialist physicians.”

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Rodski added that the athlete is making daily progress and is eager to pursuing his recovery from home.

Importantly, the executive stated that there is no set timeline for Katoa’s recovery or a potential return to training.

“In consultation with our medical team and neurology experts, Eli won't be back to training this pre-season and won’t be available for the upcoming season,” Rodski declared. “He has a long road ahead ahead of him, and his primary goal will be on returning to full health prior to contemplating a potential comeback to rugby league activities.”

Rodski finished by saying that Eli is a highly valued and respected part of the squad and club, and that the Storm family will support him fully and support him through his rehabilitation period.

Broader Context

The NRL is currently finalizing its investigation into the events that led to the required neurosurgery.

The talented player, who was named in the competition’s team of the year at the annual awards ceremony, appeared to suffer a concussion during the pregame routine for the international contest.

Despite this, he was cleared to participate in the match and suffered two additional blows to the head before being substituted in the later stages.

His state deteriorated quickly, and he required oxygen beside the field before being taken off on a stretcher.

The league has attempted to address concerns around concussions in the game in recent years, implementing stricter enforcement on dangerous contact and expanding the post-concussion stand down period for affected players.
