A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background assisted us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.

Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
