Israelis mark second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Citizens have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.
A senior delegate involved in the negotiations indicated that an late session of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the deal.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have still not achieve any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are striving to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future management of the territory
Citizen Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No place appears as home any longer and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home again, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel says 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the abducted to return. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in as payment for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli shelling continued.
In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the morning of that day in the western district, area and locality districts and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"Once the dusk comes, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.
"We are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Medical Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had received the remains of several people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional victims had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south, medical staff stated.
