In excess of 250 persons have been arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of ongoing federal border security operations, according to official sources.

Growing Federal Operations

Charlotte marks the newest American city to undergo strengthened federal involvement, following similar measures in major metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles in recent months. Government officials have stated that those detained include individuals with criminal backgrounds and gang members.

Regional Resistance

However, community representatives and inhabitants have strongly criticized the apprehensions, which federal agencies have designated "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's Democratic governor has asserted that people are being selected based on their ethnicity.

"We've witnessed concealed, heavily armed agents in tactical garb driving unmarked vehicles, selecting American individuals based on their physical characteristics, practicing racial discrimination and detaining arbitrary people in parking areas," declared the top official. "This methodology is not enhancing our safety."

Administration Position

In a recently issued statement, a federal spokesperson stated that the operation has resulted in the arrest of "among the most hazardous criminal illegal immigrants", encompassing street gang participants.

Further persons detained had been sentenced for various offenses, comprising assault on law enforcement agents, operating vehicles under influence, theft and tampering with government papers, according to the agency.

Community Reaction

The city's mayor, also a Democratic Party member, urged federal officials to operate with "regard" for the city's principles. She also commended those who took part in considerable groups on Saturday to demonstrate against the federal administration's operations in the city.

"I am seriously worried by many of the footage I've watched," remarked the municipal executive. "To each person in Charlotte who is undergoing concerned or afraid: you are not alone. Your city stands with you."

Persisting Operations

Federal agencies have not disclosed how long the operations will continue. Chicago's operation started in September and remains in progress. Similar to other cities facing immigration crackdowns, various migrants in Charlotte are remaining indoors due to fear about federal officers in the metropolitan area, according to community reporting.

The top official stated he's tracking reports that the campaign will move to Raleigh, another North Carolina city, subsequently.

"Repeatedly, I request federal authorities to target aggressive lawbreakers, not residents walking along the avenue, going to religious services, or putting up Christmas displays," he stated.
