Exceptional Scarlet Electrical Discharge Captured in Skies
Three image specialists operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph visual evidence of red lightning, one of the least common light phenomena on Earth, in which luminous crimson flashes become visible in the heavens.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
The imaging specialists initially planned to photograph the Milky Way over the distinctive clay formations in the southern region of the country on a specific autumn evening, and unexpectedly witnessed the unusual spectacle.
Assuming they would be fortunate to get good weather that night, but their night transformed into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer stated.
“He was checking his photographs for a galaxy composite and found he had captured red sprites,” the photographer said. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced screaming and shouting and all sorts going on in the night.”
Understanding Red Sprites
These crimson flashes are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, caused by storm systems. Unlike conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the earth, red sprites propel upward towards the higher altitudes, producing shapes that are similar to columns, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The initial image of a such an event was taken – by chance – in the late eighties, by a research unit at the an educational institution.
Brief and Otherworldly Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the human sight, but an individual had a lucky break. “I happened to be looking straight toward an occurrence when it took place – pure chance observing the correct area of the heavens and I saw a short crimson illumination,” he explained.
Seeing the phenomena was a dream for this individual, an acclaimed dark sky artist. “It seems that you witness an impossible sight, it’s very ethereal … the color is a profound crimson that is visible for an instant, so it’s really interesting to see.”
Skill-Based and Innovative Mastery
Capturing a this phenomenon needs a proficiency with advanced imaging techniques, as well as an knowledge about scientific principles and artistic vision, he explained. “It’s a really involved form of imaging that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
One of the other individuals remarked it was among the “most incredible evenings” of his career. “I could see the galactic band shining above the distant edge while these massive crimson strands of energy moved above a storm hundreds of kilometres away,” he explained.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no additional photographs showing scarlet electrical bursts and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in a single image.
“It was one of those moments when you understand you’re witnessing something you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
