Doris Makes Ireland Squad But McCarthy Omitted

Rugby squad selection news

Returning manager the Ireland coach has named captain Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy is absent.

Doris, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in the US on November 1.

Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are not included due to injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says new Munster pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "backup".

After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous meeting, Ireland will play Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the starting fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 chosen as the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in the second string's loss by England in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.

Southern province second row Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, and veteran Ulster second row Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.

Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
