2026 Hailed as the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their visibility has noticeably surged in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To grasp this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is partially evident elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the wave in gaming appears particularly pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.
A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
